How to translate? (en-ru)

Love people for who they are, not what they are.

Absolutely grammatical. We use WHAT where Russian uses

Uly: What does your dad do?
Anna: He works for the United Nations.
Uly: What is he?
Anna: A simultaneous interpreter.
________________________
Uly: Who’s that guy in the pool with your sisters?
Anna: He’s a relative. Sasha.
Uly: What is he to you?
Anna: A cousin.

Uly, do you know what’s funny? My dad really worked for UN and I have a cousin, whose name is Sasha. )

Shut up! That snippet just rolled off the tip of my tongue. Crazy!!!

“Uly: What is he to you?
Anna: A cousin.”

I didn’t know this usage. Thanks! )

For instance, if you have a friend who’s a Muslim and your family encourages you not to hang around with him, you should like him for WHO he is: kind, generous, intelligent… and not for WHAT he is: a Muslim.

That’s interesting, thanks! )
I think I should read about the usage of “what”, when it concerns people.
