I didn't know then we would get divorced.

Valery, your translation would be better suited to a hurricane :)

*That statements looks like it was sai after the fact. Yes, but divorces don’t normally “come your way”… movie sequels, pay raises, (un)pleasant surprises, etc. something that at least one of the parties knows about. Only someone privy to some information could tell you that you have a pay raise coming your way… a coworker who overheard a conversation, a boss who plans to surprise you, a fortune teller. In this post, the two participants sound like neither one knew that in the future they’d be getting a divorce; nobody privy gave them that information, so “coming our way” doesn’t work.

Uly, what's the difference between your "..we'd be getting a divorce" and my "...we'd get divorced"? Thanks.

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment a year ago

... I mean both - be getting vs get and get a divorce vs get divorced.

“We’d get divorced” is a little flat and uncertain. Remember that “we’d” can have a conditional or future interpretation. In this context, we want a future interpretation; the speakers didn’t know at the time what the future held for them. In that context, WE WOULD BE -ING more effectively and categorically expresses that futurity… что им предстояло, что им навстречу приходило

Like in "I'll be sending you the report early next week." Sounds more responsibly, right?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment a year ago

Sounds more *responsible

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment a year ago

I wouldn’t say it sounds responsible it sounds certain, categorical, decisive.

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment a year ago

Yes, yes, yes. Those were the words I thought about after responsible, but I wasn't quite sure which one to use )))
