Actually, the situation here isn’t contemporary with the reporting of it. It refers to the past and implies that someone heard her crying (this morning, yesterday, last week), which is somehow important, or cause for alarm, or otherwise relevant to some situation.

I nderstand. But to interpret the phrase in a way like "вдруг из её комнаты раздался плач ", more context is needed, at least for me.

But that’s incorrect - I suggested it and then thought better of it and deleted it. Here’s a snippet:
[Boarding school]

A: I have every reason to believe that Anne Taylor is suffering from depression and should see the school psychiatrist.
B: She’s always been a quiet girl, but what makes you say that?
A: She hasn’t been eating you may have noticed that she’s stick thin, and last week she was heard crying in her room at 2am by one of the other girls.

In other words, this post means “somebody heard her crying in her room”, and not “the sound of crying came from her room.” I don’t know if you can see the difference. It’s not about the sound, it’s about the fact that she was crying and someone heard it.

слышали, как она плакала в свой комнате.

That sounds about right. If it fits in the context of my snippet, it’s perfect 👍🏼

It’s not about the sound, it’s about the fact that she was crying and someone heard it. - brilliant explanation! 👍🙏

I’m glad it helped. Very interesting post!

I posted my first version directly in the translation box because the phrase seemed so elementary, with no need to check 😅

Бывает! You did it innocently, not brazenly 😉

Uly,
Getting back to «she was heard crying in her room» and my first translation. How about this:
Does this fit the original phrase? It’s also not about the sound, and it’s also about the fact that she was crying, and the others heard it.
If that was about the sound of crying, It would be «как она плакала в своей комнате, было слышно даже в кухне».

I think in that context, it is more about the sound than in my example. Also, in your snippet, the sound is concurrent with the situation; they’re not reporting that someone heard her two weeks ago, they’re hearing it shortly after she leaves the table. I would translate that in your snippet as follows:
Natasha stood up, left the table in silence and went to her room, where she was later heard crying / from which emanated the sound of her tears shortly thereafter.

After the exam, they went to Natasha's to unwind, have a few drinks, and have a bite. At the kitchen table, they started talking about how they saw their lives after graduation playing out.
When they got to Natasha, she thoughtfully said, "And I'd like to marry a decent and sincere man, be his loving wife and a caring mother to our children."
Here Michael, with his usual snide attitude, responded with
“You’re going to have to look far and wide for someone to marry you with that sullen look on your face all the damn time."
Natasha got up from the table without saying a word, and moments later, could be/was heard crying in her room.

Great! Like you wrote, this post means “somebody heard her crying in her room”, and not “the sound of crying came from her room.” That's totally clear to feel the difference. I wanted to make sure if "было слышно, как она плачет" fits the English original. I also hoped to see a backward translation from you, and now I see it's not equal to the Russian in my snippet. You had to add «moments later», a kind of determiner, in order to bring what normally implies the past event onto the scene being described. Fantastic…
Thank you, Uly!

Thank YOU, that was very interesting.

Думаю, лучший вариант - "её слышали плачущей в своей комнате", и надо его оставить.

Looks like the difference between «I saw her standing there» and «she was seen standing there» has finally reached my creative guts:
A: Джо наверняка работает на полицию.
Б: Откуда ты взял?
А: Его вчера видели выходящим из полицейского участка с каким-то майором. Они обсуждали что-то серьезное.
Б: А кто видел?
А: Неважно.
