My version: In 19XX, he was going through his drama of the failed marriage with the loved one / the one he loved.

Thank you!
Just one clarification: There was no eventual divorce, since the marriage didn't take place at all - he only wished it would happen, but he felt it was impossible for some reason. НЕСОСТОЯВШИЙСЯ брак - they loved each other, but if they had married, their music life would have been spoiled, especially for her. She would have turned into a housewife, and he knew he couldn't afford that. I guess FAILED marriage doesn't work here, while I can't find a proper adjunctive. Will IMPOSSIBLE do, or any other word in the context?

I’ll have to think…

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 3 years ago

...I just looked up IMPOSSIBLE marriage in Google Ngram, and it showed it quite frequent. Do you agree?

So is my translation incorrect? Do I need to replace it, or just add another one with your nuance?

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 3 years ago

Apart from the context, your translation IS correct (without divorce). I think НЕСОСТОЯВШИЙСЯ is initially incorrect. The word should be something like НЕОСУЩЕСТВИМЫЙ. Ngram doesn't show UNFEASIBLE marriage, and I'm still in doubt...

might-have-been/failed/not having taken place/aborted marriage

Leave the English to me, dog 😉

Uly, can this part " ...a marriage to the love of his life that wasn’t to be." be blindly intetpreted as "his LIFE wasn't to be"? Or does the word order itself puts everithing in the right place?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 3 years ago

No, he would have to be alive to have a love of his life in the first place.

Thank you! I only need to think it over... tomorrow 🥱
