I can see you lead conscious and filled life - you have to tell a lot. (?)

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 3 years ago

You can tell you're living a meaningful and fulfilled life; you DO have/get something to say!

This is the perfect context to use SURE (always stressed), when something is glaringly obvious and you just have to say something good or bad:
"That súre is a pretty dress you're wearing." (=it's so pretty, I just had to say something).
"Russian súre is hard!" (=after three weeks of studying, I have to say... this is harder than I thought!).
"Oscar quit his job yesterday two weeks before his retirement."
"He sure is stupid." (=sorry, but I just have to say it - that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard!)

Спасибо!
А что это такое - My в начале предложения?
My, what a meaningful and fulfilling life ...
?

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 3 years ago

Uly, это sure с виду простое, но я перестала пытаться его использовать после какой-то неудачной попытки. В твоих примерах могу его перевести только как «блин» 😉 или «такое» и т. д.

Или: боже (мой)

A lot of people try to make it part of a sentence, which sounds strange because it belongs in EXCLAMATIONS, where the speaker’s attitude is one of “I just have to say it.”

>Don’t stop trying! I’ll guide you.
I sure will😁

MY at the beginning of an “assessment” is snarky and sarcastic:
How was your weekend?
Great! I finished my crossword puzzle, tried a new muffin recipe, spotted a new species of bird in my garden and took a portrait of my cat in the new hat I made her.
My (oh my), what a gripping life you lead!

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 3 years ago

>I sure will.
Very good, but not the same SURE. It has to be an observation or impression or assessment of someone or some thing. In conjunction with WILL, it just means DEFINITELY.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 3 years ago

>You sure have a point!
This doesn’t work, but I’ll explain. If you look at my three examples above, they all express HOW something is: the dress is beautiful, Russian is hard, and Oscar is stupid. However, HAVING A POINT isn’t descriptive of someone. Instead, you could say something like “You sure are insightful!”

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 3 years ago

Uly, you sure ARE! 😁
Хорошо, я ещё буду пробовать🤩🙏👍

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 3 years ago

That’s the problem. You put it in a sentence. Instead say: Your remarks sure are helpful!

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 3 years ago

Аа, поняла, кажется! Ок, буду пробовать. Спасибо за терпение.
Your patience sure is endless! 🤩💪
