Pavel, as a complete sentence, that’s more Russian than English.

The words ONCE and SOMETIMES are put at the end of an utterance when they are the focus of the utterance. Otherwise, they sound more natural in front of the main verb.

So Grumbler’s translation means “He only told me one time.” Mine, means “At some point in the past, he told me.” Which one fits here, is for you natives to decide. I just wanted to point out the difference in syntax/meaning.

Pavel’s sentence makes no sense because unlike TOLD, the verb SAID needs a stated object.
