Это предложение звучит как "не может быть назван иначе" (и, возможно, продолжение, "как")
I think in this case it should be "anything else BUT"
There probably could be a few more examples, but it's not the point. Just try to translate your "it couldn't be called otherwise." What do you get??
Anyway, I think my version above is a good translation.
Look up in the dictionary what "otherwise" means:
And which one do you think proves you right?
Well, if you don't guess, then look up here:
3. say/think/decide etc otherwise - to say, think, or decide something different:
The government claims that the economy is improving, but this survey suggests otherwise.
You are wrong about otherwise. ) Can you translate your example into Russian? Or, better ask somebody who you trust. And, we'll see...
Aleh La, I followed your advice and asked a native American if this phrase was correct:
"His attitude can't be called otherwise than dishonest". And he said "yes".
1. You mix two ways of using "otherwise." and "otherwise than...". Ask your friend if your sentence makes sense if you end it before "that dishonest", as you did in your version. 2. I would translate your sentence like "В противном случае, названия у этого нет." 3 . Native Americans are American Indians, you must have meant a native speaking American. )
