Secretary: Good morning, Mr. Hughes. I wanted to remind you that the exterminators are coming at nine tomorrow, so you may want to come in at ten so you don't breathe any fumes.
Hughes: Sounds good. I'll come in at ten.
Secretary: But then you can only stay an hour because they're painting your office at 11.
Hughes: Ok, then I'll come in after lunch.
Secretary: But then you can only stay till 2 because you promised Jenny the use of your office for her meeting.
Hughes: I'll just GO AHEAD and stay home tomorrow.

Again, GO AHEAD AND is used as a last-minute decision to resolve a problem or series of problems. In this case, Hughes will just stay home and that'll fix everything.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 4

The thing is that you can use it with THEN. It doesn’t really have a translation, it just indicates that the speaker has come up with a solution or has changed his mind.

To me, something along the lines of ну если так is quite natural in the Russuan, maybe as much as "I'll just go ahead" in the English.)

The difference is that there’s a hint of frustration in GO AHEAD, like “слушай, Татьяна, почему бы мне не просто оставаться дома и бац - проблема решена(!)” But the speaker isn’t necessarily angry - GO AHEAD just means “ok, this obviously requires a decision and here it is(!)”

DAD: Young man, was I dreaming, or did I hear you come in at 5am?
SON: The party went late and I didn’t have a ride home.
DAD: And what, was Uber on strike? You know better. You’re grounded for a week.
SON: Great, a whole week to hone my gaming skills...
DAD: ...without your console.
SON: What??!!
DAD: Pick up a book for once - it won’t kill you.
SON: [under his breath] Maybe you’ll come up and read me a fairytale.
DAD: What was that? Why don’t I just go ahead and take your phone too... (holding out his hand).
Here the decision to take the phone was made instantly based on the son’s snarky remark under his breath. Like “ok, well if that’s your attitude, I just made another decision...”

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

It should be something like Что ты сказал?

Absolutely. Can I change this sentence a little?

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

You’ll know better than me))

You know better than me)))

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

You’LL know better than me.

I've learned a lot : under his breath--себе под нос, you’re grounded for a week- ты на неделю под домашним арестом and so on.) Thanks!

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

Good and let me know if I can clarify anything.

You'll have a lot of opportunities to help me and other people on this site. :)

👍🏼

You’LL know better than me?

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

I can’t seem to explain it. Let me think.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 4 года назад

>The speaker isn’t necessarily angry...
Actually, ну если так can sound neutral, angry, happy - it depends.

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

That’s not the problem. The thing is that ну если так means “if that’s the case, then I’ll just...” - too much negotiation. GO AHEAD is a split-second decision - no explanations - hey! This is what I’m going to do (!)

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 4 года назад

Ну если так also means “ok, this obviously requires a decision and here it is.”)))

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

...too much negotiation. The English means BAM! DECIDED! DONE! I’m staying home!

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

ok. “ну если так/this requires a decision” PREFACE the decision, whereas “go ahead” JUSTIFIES the decision already made. Kapeesh?

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

That’s why we say go AHEAD - because you’re getting ahead of the other person, before they can say another word, give another reason, make another complaint, etc. you stop them by letting them know that you’ve already made up your mind.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 4 года назад

Funny enough, looking at the original post once more, it seems to have a different meaning. Something along the lines of “I’m arriving home tomorrow.)))))))

SALESMAN: I know you like the Honda, but I have to say, if it were me, I’d be leaning towards the Mercedes.
ULY: Yeah, but it’s five times as much...
SALESMAN: Think of longevity. How long is a Mercedes going to last.
ULY: Well, yeah...
SALESMAN: And safety - it’s like a panzer tank. Indestructible.
ULY: True, but...
Salesman: And...
ULY: I’m going to go ahead a take the Honda. I have kids in college and I need to be sensible.
Here, Uly stops the salesman from any further insistences by using GO AHEAD to assure him that he’s already made up his mind and is going to take the Honda no matter what he says.

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

I got it! It means “let me stop you right there - this is what I’m going to do.” How would you say that in Russian?

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 4

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 4 года назад
let me stop you right there - this is what I’m going to do.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 4 года назад

Hey, Я буду дома завтра means (1) they’re away from their home today or (2) they’re on their way home.

⦿ ULYadded a comment 4 года назад

Yes! So you see, it isn’t necessarily angry, and can in fact sound quite polite (which can be very effective when you ARE angry - like the father. His polite tone would’ve infuriated the son as he handed over his phone)))
