If you want, I can go over your homework with you and make sure you’re ready for tomorrow’s test.
And what qualifies YOU to teach ME? Go over your OWN homework!
Well how do you like that! You try to help someone out and get kicked in the teeth!”

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 4 years ago

I found a snake in the garden and put it in this box. I put a brick on top so it can’t get out... [opens the box] Well how do you like that! It got out!

Zareen Khanadded a comment 4 years ago

Zareen Khanadded a comment 4 years ago

How long have you been living here? - I’ve been living here for five years. - How do you like it ? »

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 4 years ago

Да, Нуро, дело в том, что есть разница между how do you like IT и how do you like THAT.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 4 years ago

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 4 years ago

Russ Sadded a comment 4 years ago

Uly, could you elaborate more on the difference between how do you like IT и how do you like THAT? Thanks!

1added a comment 4 years ago

How do you like that?= Ну и как вам это нравится?!

Russ Sadded a comment 4 years ago

I don't think this is only related to the tone. Although, I subconsciously use correctly most of the time but in some cases I either get confused or misuse it. Maybe Uly can shed some light on it.

IT is used in answer to a question - when someone puts something “on the table” and it’s your turn to talk about it:
I just bought the new playstation.
How do you líke it? (Note the stress)
So far it’s working great.
Was it a lot?
It only cost me $100 with my brother’s discount.
All these IT’s refer to the playstation. If you use THAT, the listener will think you’re talking about something else. If YOU put something on the table - mention it first, you can use that:
How do you líke that?
It’s delicious - you should get one.

In this post, we’re using the exclamation, in which THAT is stressed:
I just sold Russ my old playstation.
How you like thát! He said he was going to buy mine! (Note the stress)

thanks, Uly.
