I just wanted to write a comment on "abuse" to point out that it's not an easy word to translate into Russian. You should know the context... And there you are.

Tatiana, I know it’s hard to translate - that’s why I commented. I wasn’t sure you realized it was about sexual abuse.

Btw I like совращать, although it has the connotation of the one-time action (the first instance of abuse).
Other options are насиловать/(сексуально) домогаться/принуждать к сексу/совершать развратные действия. Dictionaries will give you twice as much of options, but others are less popular. So, we have to choose something from my list.

The most succinct version can be like this: Ведь ты же не будешь насиловать других только потому, что насилуют тебя?
Technically, I could use those expressions in the same pattern one by one.

Uly, if that refers to those who WERE themselves abused, why are there ARE in the subordinate clause? Kind of generalization?

It’s either a kind of generalization, or they’re speaking to someone who’s being abused and is afraid that they too may become an abuser in the future.
