donation - is it not like "пожертвование" (monetary or other)?
what about "вклад в науку/литературу/искусство/...)?

That would be a contribution. I just thought donation was an alternative
in this pattern.

Then again, why would someone be willing or prepared to make a contribution to science, etc. This sounds more like a donation to me.
