this is actually the opposite of a buffet dinner, where everyone gets up and serves themself from a buffet line. A sit-down dinner is one where the food is brought to you seated at a table, as in a restaurant. Normally we use this term to refer to the kind of dinner that will be served at a wedding reception: "Will it be buffet or a sit-down dinner?"
