Девушка шла на собеседование, а её знакомый своими шутками помог ей отвлечься. Такой контекст.

Thank you, grumbler!
distract yourself -будем знать

В вашем варианте - distract herself

Anna Sevastyanovaadded a comment 20 дней назад

Distract herself - это когда она сама отвлекалась от тревожащих мыслей. А если ее отвлекал друг - he distracted her from…

👍

Думаю, все-таки лучше he tried/helped her to distract herself (/her mind) (from...)

Я думала над этим вариантом. Но Google выдает первый вариант и я думаю второй все таки неправильный.

“Distract herself“ doesn’t work here because it’s reflexive, and somebody ELSE was trying to help her.

Thank you, Uly! I think that “instincts” is not the correct word here. I’ve been studying English since I was 8 years old. I had a very long break in using it. But sometimes I just pronounce a phrase to myself to check if it’s correct, I mean to check if it sounds like English. I’m not sure how this is called. Maybe a “feel for the language”. That’s what I found via Google. I guess that it’s similar to a Russian phrase «чувство языка».
P.S. I must say that as for me it doesn’t always work. )

It’s an instinct. It instinctively didn’t sound right to you 👍🏼

Uly, я встретила такое предложение:
He should go out and take his mind off of was he was dealing with.
Можно ли в нашем примере употребить helped her to take her mind off of…? (Очевидно сходство с одним из твоих вариантов:)

•-<(||=ULY=||)>- •added a comment 14 дней назад

Конечно можно. Это очень даже распространено 👍🏼

•-<(||=ULY=||)>- •added a comment 14 дней назад

Можно: helped take/get/keep her mind off things

А, спасибо большое! И ещё: of здесь лишнее?
