Because I genuinely don't understand what is meant by this - particularly the не меньше part. I'm correcting an essay written by a Russian girl, in which she writes: "When the lease on our 7-meter room expired, the owner was very happy that we were moving out. Actually we were happy not less because we rented a flat." I didn't understand how the second sentence relates to the first, and when I asked her she gave me that Russian phrase to let me know what she was thinking. Unfortunately I'm none the wiser after reading it.
It means that they were also happy to move out of that tiny room. It was kind of mutual feeling.
вообще, это означает
we were as happy as you (or smb.) and, possibly, even more
we were happy not less than you (not to a lesser degree)
I don't understand the reasoning though: "because we rented a flat"
Have they bought their own property to move to?
They move out of that tiny ROOM to rent a FLAT.
Да, спасибо, - прочитал наспех. Думал, это та квартира, которую они арендовали и из которой переезжали куда-то.
на самом деле, т.к. в реальности невозможно сравнить </>, то это означает просто "мы тоже были очень рады/довольны"
Aha! I got it now: When we moved out... the owner was happy, and we were NO LESS happy because now we were going to move to an actual apartment (instead of a room). Thank you both!
Grumbler: ...so were we, actually, since we HAD rented...
спасибо, исправил
