Elena, WENT shopping. But if this is about buying food, then you say "I bought groceries today and got rolls"
я сегодня ходила за покупками и ходила за роллами

Ok, thank you Uly. But why DID can't be used? As to "shopping" , the sentence in Russian doesn't sound well either because we also say "ходить за покупками" about buying clothes etc. That's why I translated literally. I understood that they first did some shopping and then bought some rolls...
Elena, you just gave the perfect translation at the end of your comment 😜
DID can't be used because "do shopping" isn't a thing.
Ok, great, thanks👍

Elena, FIRST I went shopping... At the beginning of a sentence, FIRST refers to the order in which you do things. However, in front of a verb, it means "for the first time." First I watched Star Wars and then I watched Forrest Gump. (order). I first saw Star Wars when I was a teenager. (for the first time).
If your wondering why i changed up WATCH and SEE... when we see a movie at home, we use WATCH, when we see it in the movies we use SEE. So saying that you SAW the movie when you were a teenager implies that you went to the movies to see it when it first came out.
Got it, thank you!😀
