It depends on the instrument. A clock has HANDS, a gauge has a NEEDLE, an LED display has an INDICATOR, and if you don't know what to call it, it's a THINGY.

That was the point. If a person doesn't know English, he can accept the translation without realising that it's not quite correct. However, if for a gauge it's a needle too (either?) than it's the only realistic alternative that I can imagine. I though it was for compass only. Thanks.

Actually NEEDLE is quite generic in the sense that if you don't know what to call it, "needle" always works.
