David, УГОДНО combines with the interrogatives to form words that correspond to English any- : кто угодно anybody, куда угодно anywhere, с чем угодно with anything, etc.
Uly, you're right.
But I'd say that depending on the context it can be translated as every- too: if it means that every person is able to make sometging -> кто угодно - everyone, где угодно (on every place) - everywhere, and so on.
If it's not clear who, where etc. it'll be with any-: I don't know who did it. It could be done by anyone.
:-)
Irina, I'm sorry to disagree. This is actually one of the pitfalls that most Russians fall into. They don't know when to use EVERY- and when to use ANY-. In this case, we never say EVERY-.
If you look on this page, for instance, you'll see that almost every instance of УГОДНО is translated as any-:
Guys..l feel like as if l m with my own family when you cover for me..thank you very much for explanations above
It's an absolute pleasure. You seem to really be sticking to your Russian, and that's cool.
we expect lots of russian guests and unfortunately they dont speak English which means l have to do the other way around
Not a bad deal :-)
Uly, this is because in Russian there're so many shades of meaning that only one word can't show it. They say for a good reason that Russian is the language of synonyms :-) that's why for us any- means a not clear situation, an unknown person etc., every- something like each one :-)
Russian is indeed very nuanced!
Yes, it is)
to David and Uly: В таких случаях мы говорим:"Если гора не идёт к Магомету, то Магомет идёт к горе."
А вы используете английский эквивалент этой поговорки "If the mountain will not go to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain"
? Таким образом иносказательно передаётся желание, необходимость или потребность сделать первый шаг навстречу партнёру, оппоненту и т.д.
to Uly and David: На странице, ссылку на которую ты, Ули, привёл, также встречается whatever. Можно ли тогда сказать: He'll do for you whatever you like (wish?/want) - Он сделает для тебя всё, что угодно?
Если да, то тогда возможны ли варианты с wherever, whenever и т.д?
Да, Татьяна. аnything you want и whatever you want имеют одно и тоже значение. Но everything you want говорит об определённом списке тех вещей, которые ты (уже сказала, что) хочешь.
Thanks a lot, Uly!
Anytime, doll
Uly, could you please have a look on it and say your opinion?
