“Don’t hold your breath” is an interesting expression. We use it when someone has expectations and you feel they’re in vain. For instance:
JOHN: I can’t take Adam’s bullying any longer. I know he’s our manager, but there has to be a limit as to how much he can humiliate me in front of the other employees. I’ve written an email to the CEO, Mr. Jacobs, and I trust that by next week, he will have dealt with this.
RICKY: Yeah... don’t hold your breath - Mr. Jacobs is Adam’s uncle.
