We normally only use the word STRATA in the phrase “strata of society.” In this example, it’s analogous to that phrase in that it implies the manner of speaking of certain strata of society.

Языковой пласт is normally used to refer to the manner of speaking of certain strata of society. Or, sometimes, in a broader sense.
