SO FAR doesn’t mean the same as THIS FAR. It means “only to a certain point”: “A passing knowledge of English will only get you so far; if you want to work in the US, you have to be relatively conversant in the language.”
как перевести: motivation alone will only get you so far
что значит эта конструкция WIll only get you so far

достичь только определённого результата/уровня¿
Tatiana, “only so far” is another way of saying that something is not a total solution - you will eventually need more skill, money, experience, etc. In my example above, it means that a little knowledge of English will only be partially helpful, but eventually you will need a certain level of English proficiency into order to hold down a job in the US.
Manager: I know that Mrs. Sherman hired you because of your looks - you’re not the first pretty boy she drags in here. But those looks will only get you so far. Eventually, you’ll need to make her money and you have ZERO experience, so enjoy your job while you have - it won’t last long.
Ага! Одна мотивация - это ещё не всё./На одной мотивации далеко не уедешь.¿
I knew "so far", but this "get you so far" confused me. 🙏
Yes! It’s because SO here is very vague in meaning - it literally means “only to a certain point”: “In certain countries, you can only be so wealthy and then the government starts taking money from you.” = только разрешают людям богатеть до конкретного/определенного пункта, а потом... (<— probably incorrect, but you know what I mean). We know when it’s this “so” by the intonation.
«Я знаю, миссис Шерман взяла тебя (на работу) из-за твоей внешности - ты не первый смазливый мальчик, которого она сюда притащила. Но на одной внешности далеко не уедешь/одной внешности мало. Рано или поздно тебе придётся зарабатывать для неё деньги, и у тебя нет никакого опыта, поэтому работай пока работается - это ненадолго.»
What refers to your last example, I'd translate it as разрешают людям богатеть только до определённого предела...
That all was because I'd sooner perceive "so far" as a time marker, which it definitely isn't there.
If I thought my snippet was brilliant in English, reading it in Russian brings tears to my eyes! 😂💐💝
So now that you know what this means, how does Valery’s translation rate?
Downright literal and that's why it's off.
A Russian version of your brilliant snippet brings tears to your eyes? 😁👍
Tears of joy to see my humble snippet in your magnificent language.
Please add a translation.
I'm touched beyond words you love Russian so much! 😍👍🙏
... so enjoy your job while you have ¿it¿ - так что радуйся, пока ты здесь (работаешь)... This is better I think.
Have IT, yes
