chicken - трусы

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

Is there an animal that’s associated with cowardice in Russian?

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

This wouldn’t make sense in Spanish either because we use “chicken” to refer to an extremely good looking man.

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

Not replace, but maybe something along the lines of “these chickens aren’t hares - they’re not afraid...”

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

Not bad! What do you think?

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

👍🏼

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

may be CHICKEN, but these HEROES ?

may be chicken, but ARE heroes - не было бы логичнее ?

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

No. By the same token, you could say “They may not be Latin, but these Russians can dance salsa better than the average Cuban.”

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

" may be not Latin, but these good dancers" would be closer

Yes, this makes some sense, I agree now

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

You took away the dichotomy)) That’s the crux of the whole thing. It would be surprising for someone who isn’t Latin to dance salsa better than a cuban. By the same token, it’s notable that although they’re “chicken,” they’re heroes.

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

Did I?
Chicken (coward) - hero
Not Latin (bad dancer) - good dancer

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

'Not Latin' and 'Russian' are about the same

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

A good dancer can be Cuban and it wouldn’t be surprising - it’s the being Russian that warrants the dichotomy with “may be”

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

...in this case “may NOT be”

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

I don't understand
Your example was "not Latin" - "Russian" (i.e. no contrast)
The original was "chicken" - "hero" (i.e. contrast)

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 6 years ago

Forget all that - the original dichotomy is that something that’s chicken, is not expected to be a hero. That was the logic you were questioning. By the same token, someone who’s not latin isn’t expected to dance better than a cuban.

grumbleradicionou o comentário 6 years ago

OK, forgotten.
