At 5 am came the daily wake-up call: a hammer against a section of rail at the main barracks. The intermittent clanks buzzed dully through the window panes, frosted over two-fingers thick with ice, then they abruptly stopped; it was cold out - far too cold to keep swinging that hammer, apparently.
