Тогда можно, но тут необходимо уточнить когда и употреблять " haven't finished it yet": I was reading the book you gave me last night, but I haven't finished it yet.

That's not what I meant. Here are your options: I was reading the book you gave me, but I didn't finish it. -or- I've been reading the book you gave me, but I haven't finished it. You had another combination of tenses originally that didn't make sense without a temporal adverb. But the original Russian without "last night" is fine.
