This translation is irrelevant.
It shall be synonym to "awareness", as this word describes your familiarity with a subject or a competence in it. Apart from "awareness" this word does not put an emphasis on how consciously you perceive the subject, rather gives the idea that you've read up on the subject or investigated it well enough.
