As.you can see, we use this expression when we express our expectations for a specific outcome, but it doesn't come to pass. It expresses more disappointment and frustration that simply saying "unfortunately that wasn't the case." In cases like my first example, it often expresses disappointment over a foiled malicious intent when the speaker wishes to be sarcastically humorous or genuinely vicious.
