Galina: to go gray means to make the decision to dye your hair gray, or to consciously stop coloring it so that it naturally turns gray. Is that what is meant here?

Нет, седеть -- значит, когда волосы становятся седыми. К окрашиванию это не имеет отошения.
Но я думала, что правильно перевела. Гугл дает много результатов с "went gray early". И там, вроде бы, достаточно релевантные ссылки.
