How to translate? (en-ru)

    Books closed! No peeking!

    Translator's comment

It would be more realistic in a classroom environment to break this up into two imperatives. Another thing that teachers say in this situation is "Eyes in front of you!" -or- "Eyes front!"

Grumbler, my dear, a true translator doesn't translate words, but renders concepts and meaning - and this is a perfect example. Naturally, you could say Stop cheating... BY PEEKING INTO YOUR BOOK, but that would not be a realistic rendering of what a teacher would actually say in this situation in an English-speaking classroom. If there's a student, a book, and an intention, it's enough to say "Don't cheat!" -or- if the cheating is already underway, then "Stop cheating!" Good work!

Oksana, my Russian is a "work in progress." However, I adore your language and I am constantly working at improving it.

Thank you, doll, that's very sweet. Count on me for the same 😁

Uly, is "don't peep into the book" workable?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

Elena, I agree that PEEP means to glance into something like a book, a door, etc. However, at least to me, it doesn't transmit the intention of cheating. For this, we use PEEK. Additionally, in the US, the verb PEEP is more often used to refer to the sound that chicks make, or when you want someone to keep a secret, you say "Not a peep (about this to anyone)!" Also, when people take their children to the doctor for a procedure, they often say "Elena was so good. The doctor gave her a shot and she didn't make a peep."

Noted!

Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 8

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 8

To peep может означать:
2. подглядывать в замочную скважину (through the keyhole) за кем-то (at someone)

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 8

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 8

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 8
