I know the Russian says IF, but we would use WHEN in this utterance

Галина Палагутаadded a comment 8 years ago

Руслан, " If ONE doesn't like" -- этот "one" может быть и женщиной, и мужчиной. Поэтому в подобных случаях правильней использовать не he и his, а their и they.

Улий, возможно, Макса смутило "someone" alongside "their" and "they". Не все знают, что в английском, чтобы не говорить "he or she", используют they, хотя someone -- это единственное число.
When someone doesn't like HIS OR HER job, HE OR SHE will find any excuse to not do it.
Вместо "he or she" используют "they": When someone doesn't like THEIR job, THEY'll find any excuse to not do it.
Поэтому когда мы видим в английском "When SOMEONE doesn't like THEIR job, they'll...", это кажется очень необычным.

А мне интересен порядок слов - to not do it. У нас во всех учебниках всегда было not to do it. Uly, это теперь так говорят to not do it?

Elena, when I was in school, there was a rule about not writing "split infinitives" (for example TO not DO). But that rule has lost validity over the past two decades and it's been concluded that there's really no difference, especially since most people naturally put not in the middle in normal speech. Here's an interesting discussion in the subject: http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/177039/negative-infinitive-not-to-do-something-versus-to-not-do-something

Thanks, Uly, I've read about "To be or to not be" :)
