Точнее "складка становится примитивным крылом". Потому что из самой складки никакого крыла не появляется, это же белка-летяга :)

This describes a flying squirrel jumping or falling out of a tree, for example. When it finds itself in the air, it wriggles (makes a small movement) and its little "wing" extends out.
