This is an adjective meaning living and not virtual.

Doesn’t turning this phrase into a noun, and then translating it, defeat the whole purpose?

“I didn’t call the hotline because I wanted to talk to a flesh-and-blood insurance agent and not an automated response system on the phone.”

Real people are flesh-and-blood; real locations are brick-and-mortar.

What purpose? Я перевел *другую* фразу и попросил предложение.

Real people are flesh-and-blood

А здесь я все-равно перевел бы существительным.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 2 years ago

The purpose of translating the phrase the poster asked about and not giving him a different part of speech just for the sake of posting хоть something.

grumbleradded a comment 2 years ago

I disagree. IMO, something is better then nothing, but I don't mind deleting if you insist.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 2 years ago

IMO, if I’m asking about an adjective phrase and someone changes it into a noun phrase, I’d be pissed. Sometimes nothing is better than something different especially when someone else may be able to translate the actual post.

grumbleradded a comment 2 years ago

I translated the noun and added a comment that with dashes it would be a corresponding adjective that I couldn't translate without the context. IMO, this made perfect sense, and if you'd be pissed it's your personal problem.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 2 years ago

IMO, the adjective doesn’t need a context because it means ACTUAL/REAL as opposed to virtual. Changing the post because you don’t know what it means, i.e. out of ignorance, doesn’t solve the poster’s problem, i.e. answer his question; it only confuses him more. Especially when there’s someone here who CAN define it properly.

OK, just add the translation then

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 2 years ago

I don’t know it. I don’t like to translate Russian unless I know what I’m talking about, and I’m big enough to admit I don’t in this case. But someone will read my snippet and come up with the right translation.

«Я не позвонил на горячую линию, потому что хотел с живым/реальным страховым агентом, а не с автоответчиком.»

"из плоти и крови" выступает в данном случае типа как прилагательное со значением "живой, реальный"

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 2 years ago

Then THAT’s the optimal translation 👍🏼🤩

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 2 years ago

Uly, that may be the optimal translation, but not for your snippet because it’s a little bit too poetic, although it has the meaning of живой.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 2 years ago

Aha! So then it’s NOT the ideal translation. I was misled by Valery’s comment. We use it in English all the time and it doesn’t sound poetic. It’s actually quite popular.

it has the meaning of живой

In that context, we say “to be (made from) flesh and blood”, but not with the adjective flesh-and-blood, as far as I know.
