There’s no way to translate this without knowing what they mean by dead behind the eyes. Are they heroin addicts and one is more functional than the other? Without this mystery there’s no way to translate this into Russian. I don’t know what Al’s translation means, but unless he’s reading the same book, there’s no way he can know what this means. 

Without any context, dead behind the eyes would mean that someone is soulless, has no conscience, etc.

I just read the original passage and the surrounding paragraphs and I have no idea what this means in English, let alone Russian. I don’t know what he means by them both being dead behind the eyes, and how paying rent fits into his assessment of them. It’s bizarre to say the least.

They sound like two drug addicts or drunks in a very toxic relationship. Not a good book for learning English if you ask me.
