I don’t agree with the sample sentence cited. We normally say “steal THE covers”. The author of that sentence is someone from Reddit. I’ve looked at his other posts and his English is questionable at best.

*My wife doesn't steal THE covers,<[comma] but she totally doesn't get the idea of lifting the coverS before moving/TURNING.
OK, I'm changing the example. I agree that THE is more common.
