They CAN, but it’s not an idiom. For instance: My brothers brought home a watermelon. My mouth was watering. I LOVE watermelon. So they started cutting it and my phone rang. I went in the other room to take the call, and when I came back 15 minutes later, there was nothing left but a bunch of seeds.
