Use "we were stuck in traffic" or "we were sitting in traffic" instead

GOT STUCK is the beginning of BEING STUCK, so you’re both right. It all depends on what aspect of the experience you’re referring to: (1) if it’s the entire experience looking back, then WE GOT STUCK IN TRAFFIC; (2) if it’s any part of that experience, then WE WERE STUCK IN TRAFFIC.
