It is an extract from Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster

It is written as follows:
“While the others are hopping about in the air, I can dodge under their feet and grab the ball”
I have two questions

1 Is this indirect speech correct?

2 My second question is more complicated.

Я знаю, что можно использовать “would”, описывая события из прошлого.
Например: «В те годы, во времена моего детства в деревне, мы бы вставали ранним летним утром и выходили бы во двор босиком, походить по по влажной от росы траве...»
Can you help me with the translation of the sentence?

I can translate it, but like Tatiana, I’ve never seen Russian use бы the way we use WOULD.

Мне подобная фраза нужна в прямой и в косвенной речи.

Nothing changes - you still use WOULD: She said... she would get up early...

Or
She said that while the others would be hopping about in the air, she would dodge under their feet and grab the ball.

Is in her direct speech she says:
“While the others are hopping about.... “ (Present Continuous)
