Вот что получилось: Whole piece of the Norwegian's village was washed off to the sea for 10 seconds.

That sentence has 7 mistakes, starting with Alex's suggestion (sorry, Sasha, I adore you, but that phrase doesn't exist)

In Norway the whole piece of land was washed away into the sea within 10 seconds.

Russ Sadded a comment 4 years ago

Just within 10 seconds, a significant part of Norwegian village was washed away into the sea.

Russ Sadded a comment 4 years ago

Uly, the 2 versions above, do they sound good?

Андриолли 1added a comment 4 years ago

Русс, спасибо, In Norway the whole piece of land was washed away into the sea within 10 seconds. ваше предложение очень похоже на моё, )) а почему within, разве нельзя in 10 seconds?

Russ Sadded a comment 4 years ago

Zoya, I cannot explain why I used 'within". As I've been saying I only use my intuition. I'm not aware of any grammatical rules that can be applied here. Perhaps both would work. Uly can probably clarify.

я бесконечно рада, что нашла эту новость на английском.
все это используется и washed away и swept:
Several houses were WASHED AWAY when a large piece of land was suddenly SWEPT into the sea in a major landslide in Norway.

Андриолли 1added a comment 4 years ago

tumbled into the sea. упал в море. разве этот глагол подходит сюда?

Русс, получили помощь? То-то и оно.

Мне тоже пришло на ум within 10 seconds...

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 4 years ago

The unbelievable part of this sentence is the little time it took, so that part should go first.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 4 years ago

In order to stress the brevity of the act, we would use (WITH)IN A MATTER of ten seconds -or- IN A MERE ten seconds.

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 4 years ago

Uly,
“How many years can a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea?”
Isn’t it something similar in terms of washing off/away?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 4 years ago

It just doesn’t sound natural to me. I’ve always here washed out to sea, or washed into the sea: https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=washed+to+the+sea%2C+washed+out+to+sea%2C+washed+into+the+sea%2C+washed+away+in+the+sea&corpus=26&year_start=1800&year_end=2019&smoothing=3&direct_url=t1%3B%2Cwashed%20to%20the%20sea%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2Cwashed%20out%20to%20sea%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2Cwashed%20into%20the%20sea%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2Cwashed%20away%20in%20the%20sea%3B%2Cc0
