took the side = занял сторону, т.е. не был ни на чьей стороне и решил занять отдну из сторон.

"перешел на сторону" подразумевает, что он ИЗМЕНИЛ сторону, т.е. был на одной стороне и перешел на другую.

switched/changed the side?

I agree. Занял чью-то сторону и перешёл на чью-то сторону is not the same in Russian. What about English?

Btw, I was considering "changing sides", but it doesn't take any indirect object like на сторону местных, if I'm not mistaken.
