WONDER means to ask yourself Why?

I wonder if Vera would grace us with the entire sentence so that we don't have to wonder what this means!

If it's followed by 'why/what/...", then, I'd say "они удивились/изумились почему/зачем/что..."

Можно сказать "им было любопытно", но смысл, на мой взгляд, тот же самый.

If it's followed by 'whether', then yes, it's possibly better to translate "им было интересно/любопытно", но все равно можно и "они удивились"

Many years later, they seemed wondering what happened to my straight hair?
После многих лет они, похоже, удивились, что случилось с моими волосами.

Ah ok. It just sounded to me like удивиться means to show surprise or mild shock, when WONDER is just to ask yourself why. Good to know!
