Just because you find things online and in dictionaries, doesn’t make them current or popular. BEGINNER TRAVELER sounds like two separate nouns. It sounds stupid, especially when expressions like FIRST-TIME TRAVELER and AMATEUR TRAVELER are available and sound terrific.

It can be. Normally amateur is the opposite of professional, but it can also be interpreted as someone starting out in some discipline or activity.

Grumbler, yes. My first choice for this post would be FIRST-TIME TRAVELER. The only reason AMATEUR works here is that it CAN be interpreted as “beginning,” but the true meaning of amateur is non-professional. You can be traveling for 30 years as an amateur by virtue of that definition.

The same with Russian начинающий - it can have literal meaning or неопытный (and непрофессиональный - in a specific context)

Your friends tell you what they think you want to hear. If you asked them pointedly to choose between FIRST-TIME TRAVELER, AMATEUR TRAVELER and BEGINNER TRAVELER, I bet none of them would use BEGINNER TRAVELER in their actual speech/writing. It looks and sounds horrific - like two nouns side-by-side. This site should present the most prevalent, intelligent, modern and viable English possible for those serious about improving their English. Not everyone who writes online is equipped to do so. That’s where Ngrams shine - they show what actual authors use in books. The fact that no writer has ever used the expression BEGINNER TRAVELER is witness to its ugliness. If I weren’t here as a native to orient everyone, they would have to take what’s posted on here at face value. I hope to shed light on English and help them weed out what’s undesirable and even unacceptable - even if it’s in a dictionary or online.

AMATEUR TRAVELER wouldn’t be my first choice here, but it works. It’s low in the Ngram, but it’s there for a reason. There’s a reason BEGINNER TRAVELER isn’t there.
