How to translate? (ru-en)

Образование - это то,что остаётся после того,когда забываешь все,чему учили в школе.Через 30 лет вы совершенно точно забудете все,что вам приходилось изучать в школе.Запомнится только то,чему вы научились сами.

Альберт Эйнштейн

  1. 1.

Education is what’s left over after you’ve forgotten everything you were taught in school. In 30 years’ time, you'll most definitely forget everything you had to take in school. You only remember the things you learned on your own.

“Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.”

Tatiana, as a rule, I don’t look at your translations until I’ve done my own so that I’m not influenced. Yours is excellent - just a few comments: Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one LEARNED in school. In 30 years you’ll most definitely forget what you were taught in school. You’ll remember only what you learned ON YOUR OWN/TAUGHT YOURSELF.

However, you have WHAT YOU WERE TAUGHT IN SCHOOL, whereas the Russian looks to me more like the things you were forced to study, no?

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 5 years ago

Uly, thank you.)) 🙏 I actually copied the first part of it from the internet. "On your own" was my initial guess.

That makes sense because Einstein’s first language was German, and in German the perfect is used instead of the plain past.

"However, you have WHAT YOU WERE TAUGHT IN SCHOOL, whereas the Russian looks to me more like the things you were forced to study, no?"
Absolutely. I changed that to have kind of contradiction "were taught - learned on your own", overlooking the given "пришлось учить - выучил сам" contradiction.

Ah, ok. The problem is that WERE TAUGHT can sound resultative (you were SUCCESSFULLY taught something - you learned it).

Yes, that looks like a literal translation from German, although it wasn't spoken language Das Perfekt wird insbesondere in der gesprochenen Sprache verwendet.

Na eben, und ich glaube er hat das tatsächlich gesagt, oder, mindestens, geschrieben, als wenn er es gesagt hätte)))
