The pattern [NOUN] of a [NOUN] is used when designations are used to describe someone instead of adjectives: nothing is worse than a tyrannical, sadistic, stupid boss --> nothing is worse than a tyrant, sadist, idiot of a boss. ORCHID is used figuratively to describe something that will one day "bloom" - I guess in this story, the son tried a lot of ways to become successful and they parents believed and him and encouraged him because they knew that one day, it would all pay off and he be a success.
