I have no idea about what they do in the winter.

I can't imagine

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

Good! That’s what they all mean 👍🏼

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

Slavik, the progressive doesn’t sound quite right here. I think this refers to what they generally DO in the winter.

what they do in the winter beats me

this sounds as if you know what they do and this beats you (is it so?) while the Russian phrase means you don't know what they do in the winter...

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

BEATS ME means I have no idea, can’t imagine.

[roommate] A: I just got a message from your mother, of all people, asking me to call her. Do you have any idea what she wants? B: Beats me. I haven’t spoken to her since our argument last week. She probably just wants to know if I’m OK.

Slavik, “I don’t know” is correct, but DOING is out of place.

Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 5 years ago

"I don't know" sounds neutral, while ума не приложу - colloquial and emphatic

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

Ah. Good to know

grumbleradded a comment 5 years ago

Slavik Sokuradded a comment 5 years ago

Slavik Sokuradded a comment 5 years ago

Well, Meggie, I don't know what to do with you.

Slavik Sokuradded a comment 5 years ago

How we're going to manage now, I don't know!

grumbleradded a comment 5 years ago

Slavik Sokuradded a comment 5 years ago

- I don't know how those rumours started!

grumbleradded a comment 5 years ago

Slavik Sokuradded a comment 5 years ago

Slavik Sokuradded a comment 5 years ago

grumbleradded a comment 5 years ago
