Хороший способ выбора артикля от Александра Акимова:
Артикль "А" = какой-нибудь, любой;
Артикль "THE" = тот / этот самый.
Подставляете, и смотрите, что подходит по смыслу.

I don’t understand your question, but generally speaking, we say Go to THE doctor.

I meant that we can't say "go to A doctor" because in such a case one may understand that he can choose any doctor regardless the doctor's residence (specialization).
