Alex, I think Elvis was the last person who called it a "movie show"

Assuming that we're talking to a friend or relative, we wouldn't use "because" and much less "as" - this would be two statements: I can't go... I'm...

Elena, "too busy" can mean mowing the grass, taking care of your kids, if this relates specifically to work, you're either "swamped" or "bogged down with work" or "in the weeds"

Elena, also, we only use "movie theater" when we refer to the building itself, not the experience of going "to the movies": There was a long line outside the movie theater. -or- They don't allow smoking in the movie theater.

🙂 Thanks!
What about "I have a lot on my dish"?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 6 years ago

on my PLATE - that can also be personal drama, so no, not if this refers to work

Also, I want to point something out. If you initiate a call to inform someone that you can’t join them, you don’t use “because” - you make two announcements: (1) you can’t go (2) the situation that’s preventing you: I’m not going to dinner with you all - I’m dieting. However, if someone reprimands or questions you and you’re forced to explain WHY you can’t go, then you use “because”: Husband: Do you want to go to the movies? Wife: I can’t. Husband: You complain that we never do anything, but every time I propose something, you can’t do it. Wife: I can’t go because I have to work a double shift, not because I don’t want to. Let’s go tomorrow.

I can't go to the movies with you - I'm swamped. Умолчу даже о том, что это разговорная фраза, просторечие в английском языке. Но и перевод неверный.
I can't go to the movies переводится как не могу ХОДИТЬ в кино", когда требуется подчеркнуть разовость недееспособности субъекта.
А I'm swamped буквально завален". В узком кругу НУ МОЖЕТ БЫТЬ будет и понятно. Тут как повезет.
