This refers to dealing with someone (or avoiding them) when they are in a bad way, i.e. when they’re “on the warpath”: “Mr. Griffin is a good boss, but I would avoid him when he’s on the warpath.”

You can also say “get someone on a bad day/in a bad mood” - “Alex is fun to hang out with, but don’t get him on a bad day/when he’s in a bad mood.”
