птички с зубом?
что-то я сомневаюсь...

Я тоже сомневалась. Загуглите, англоязычные ссылки есть, начиная от названия муз групп, до исследований вопроса.

да и насчет "сахарных" птичек тоже
похоже на заблуждение
гугл для "sugar birds" из похожих находит только "Bananaquits, or Sugar Birds ... a favorite of the Virgin Islanders" - и острова не Канарские, и птица не совсем канарейка, хотя и с желтым пузом

насчет зуба - да - "hummingbirds clearly have a sweet tooth"

Also, if you're going to use ONCE like this, you need to put it before the verb for maximum effect and naturalness: They were ONCE called... Otherwise it just sounds like ONLY ONE TIME.

+Татьяна: только CANARIES have a sweet tooth... (if you mean to be humorous and attribute a human predilection to a fowl)))
