Paddington Bearadded a comment 7 years ago

To let every Tom, Dick and Harry into...

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

No, Elena, not at all.

David Webbadded a comment 7 years ago

it means leaving nobody in the street? ?in the sense of providing a place to stay the night in?. .By the way welcome back Uly )

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

No David, it means to let every stranger in. It’s usually said sarcastically.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

In a negative sense, at least, from this speaker's view. Someone can think they provide a place to stay the night in, but the speaker disapproves it.
- Мама, можно у нас Катя переночует - мы с ней сегодня в магазине познакомились, она с родителями поссорилась, ей идти некуда?
- Ну вот, пускаешь в дом кого попало. Ничем хорошим это в конце концов не кончится.

my saviour is here ))thank you

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

Thank you, David. Basically it means to let anybody in willy-nilly.

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

Tatiana, to do something in willy-nilly means to do it spontaneously.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

Ольга, каюсь, знала значение «волей-неволей», не подумала про возможные другие. Тогда мне, наверное, лучше удалить свой пост, чтобы не отрывать людей от дела глупостями?))

Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 7 years ago

Thank you, Uly. I deleted my translation. What about Paddington Bear's translation? I think it's very good.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

It’s very good, but it’s also suited for a woman who is not very picky
about her men, so it can be ambiguous.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

Willy-nilly means без разбору

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

to let anybody IN willy-nilly

David Webbadded a comment 7 years ago

Thank you very much guys ))with given examples, l will never forget this phrase

David Webbadded a comment 7 years ago

Neither will we / We won't either

Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 7 years ago

I wonder, if it's Am. E - We neither...

David Webbadded a comment 7 years ago

Correct me if l m wrong Uly, but In English, a double negation is not allowed. It's considered as redundant.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

That’s correct, David.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

Elena, it’s English. A: I’ll never forget this day. B: Me neither.

@David Like угодно, попало can take certain question words, for instance:
Не занимай деньги КОМУ попало!
Твой сын общается с КЕМ попало.
Опять ты кладёшь телефон КУДА попало!
Вечно твои носки валяются ГДЕ попало!

David Webbadded a comment 7 years ago

thank you very much for clarification
