    Translator's comment

ALL OF is used when an amount or an age is unbelievable or surprising given the circumstances: "Anna can play Chopin, Beethoven and even Rachmaninoff on the piano - and she's all of 6 years old!" -or- "With this new Russian Language method I learned how to count to ten, introduce myself, ask directions and order lunch in all of one hour."

Thank you, Uly, a useful expression 👍
Though we're still having plus temperatures, in all of a couple of weeks winter may come to Moscow

Да он всё-таки верен в некоторых случаях)

It's good to be optimistic. Though we're still having minus temperatures, in all of couple of months spring may come here. ;)

...all of A couple

Ага, потеряла по дороге. Спасибо! :)

How about "Though we're ALREADY having minus temperatures, in all a couple of months ...»? This is actually what I meant to write but wasn't careful enough.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

Yes. All OF a couple...

Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 7 years ago

But before, we were talking about the meaning "всего", while in the last post the meaning is "целых". In Russian they are different. It appears in English this fits for both.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

Uly, it's confusing because целых and всего have opposite connotations. Ты собрал этот пазл всего за 20 минут? (surprise & admiration). Ты собирал этот пазл целых 20 минут? (disapproval). Would the difference of that kind be expressed through the verb forms?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

The context dictates whether it corresponds to целых or всего, but in both cases the number is amazing to the speaker.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

It emphasizes how small or how large a number is.

I never thought about it before, but you’re right it is confusing.
