Вообще, "как вы произносите (что-либо?" - это "how do you spell...?".
A "how do you say ("hello" in Japanese)?" - это "как сказать ("привет" по-японски)?".

⦿ ULYadded a comment 7 years ago

Ольга права. Как вы произносите - это "How do you pronounce/spell (your last name)?"

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 7 years ago

Но “spell” - это ведь именно написать? Или произносить тоже?
Ули, не терзай душу!😩

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

Александр, знаете есть такая популярная штука в США основном для школьников), называется "spelling contest". Это когда ведущий называет слово, а участники должны его правильно по буквам произнести. Да и вообще, обычный вопрос "How do you spell your name?".

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 7 years ago

То есть не B-I-double L, а именно произнести?

⦿ ULYadded a comment 7 years ago

😂

⦿ ULYadded a comment 7 years ago

I won a spelling bee when I was in third grade 😂

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

Uly, I bet you did, dear! 😊

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

Александр, произнести по буквам это и есть "to spell".

⦿ ULYadded a comment 7 years ago

I’ll never forget - I won with the word “unanimous” and they gave me a little trophy :)

Holy Molyadded a comment 7 years ago

Awww 😊

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 7 years ago

Ольга, я знал ещё со школы, что spell это произнести по буквам. Но либо я что-то не догоняю, либо Вы мне говорите, что spell и pronounce - одно и то же.
Пожалуйста, поясните. А то Ули хохочет до слёз, я в замешательстве 😳

⦿ ULYadded a comment 7 years ago

I was laughing because Olga brought up spelling bees and I haven’t thought about them in years.

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 7 years ago

Ok, but how about spelling? I have always thought that to spell means to write or say letters of a word separately, one by one. But now it seems that Olga and you are telling me that to spell is also to pronounce words.

⦿ ULYadded a comment 7 years ago

In English it means to give the letters of a name, yes. But I was told that there’s no direct verb for SPELL in Russian, so they use произносить.

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 7 years ago

Yes, no direct word in Russian for spell. But when I asked someone Don Huinh “How do you say your last name?”, he pronounced it just how it sounds. Was my question incorrect, or should I say “How do you pronounce...?”

⦿ ULYadded a comment 7 years ago

In that context, yes, you would say “how do you say/pronounce your name?”

Alexander Аkimovadded a comment 7 years ago

Oh, many thanks! I already started to be afraid that I can be taken for the lady with more than a hundred comments in a single chat.😢

Well deserved! Good night)
