Честно говоря, Uly, я не уверен, что "We're onto you (eggheads)" - достаточно адекватный перевод моего "знаем мы вас (умников)"
http://phraseology_ru_en.academic.ru/20053/знаем_мы_вас!

Насчет "egghead", думаю smartass или know-all были бы более понятны. В отличие от egghead, "умник" в современном русском, думаю, имеет только иронический/саркастический оттенок.

(1) All the meanings under знаем мы вас mean the same as "we're onto you" - we don't trust you, we know what you're up to, we know your type… (2) an egghead is a smartass by virtue of having done everything you listed: read heaps of books and thinks he knows everything, has "book" knowledge. (3) on what do you base your assumption that smartass and know-it-all are more sarcastic than egghead? Look at the first meaning: http://translate.academic.ru/Egghead/en/ru/

https://ru.wiktionary.org/wiki/умник
думаю, только (2) правильны:
2. разг., неодобр. или ирон. человек, раздражающе кичащийся своим умом или знаниями, но на деле проявляющий посредственные способности
Синонимы
2. всезнайка

Thank you, but you overlooked one small detail: an egghead is by definition someone who thinks they know everything from reading lots of books.

grumbleradded a comment 7 years ago

Well, http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/egghead
"a person, especially a man, who is very clever and interested only in studying and other mental activities
Thesaurus: synonyms and related words - Intelligent people"
I don't see any sarcasm here. And there is a TV show http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006z736 without, I think, any hidden irony in the name. I can be wrong about the TV though.

"we're onto you" = we know your type…
Yes, but this isn't the first meaning and is less obvious. *To me* "we're onto you" implies some (active) chasing, not a (passive) knowing. Again, it might be just me.

Trust me, it's you.

The interpretation of egghead depends on the context, like everything in language. And if you come to the point that you have to tell a group of intellectuals that you are onto them for something, you basically consider them eggheads.

Having said that, everyone on this site is welcome to their own interpretation of
English. I'm only offer my native insights for anyone who's interested 🙂

You should post your original Russian sentence in our conversation as a translation here it's perfect.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

I don't understand what you mean by that. This phrase basically means that the other person is not fooling you, you're not stupid, you know what they are all about, etc.

grumbleradded a comment 7 years ago

"This phrase basically means that the other person is not fooling you" - не сумеет обмануть? Значит, пытается обмануть.

"you're not stupid, " - то же самое, намекает на то, что тебя пытаются обмануть.

I sill feel that "We're onto you" is too 'strong' in this context compared to "знаем мы вас", and "we know your type" is more soft/neutral and, hence, close.

E.g.
Знаю я его - у него одни бабы на уме. (здес нет никакого намерения обмануть)
Знаю я тебя, так и норовишь увильнуть от работы (здесь есть некоторый обман - думаю, "I'm onto you" подходит больше)

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

Oh, you meant a "passing" knowledge! Now I understand. Yes, if you're just expressing a passing knowledge with no insinuation of misdeed, then "I know you" is more neutral.

grumbleradded a comment 7 years ago

No, passiVE knowledge/guess/assumption. You just know this without accusing the other part of anything.
"Однако, напоминаем, что при всей теоретической осведомленности, следует прислушаться к совету лечащего врача, ... " - the hidden implication, not accusation, is ~ "Знаем мы вас, вы все сейчас много всего читаете и думаете, что все знаете сами, но, пожалуйста, не игнорируйте совет врача..." Здесь никто никого не пытается обмануть (actively), никто никого за руку не хватает (actively), не обвиняет, просто знают (passively) и поэтому советуют, несмотря ни на что, прислушаться к совету.

Yes, you hear all kinds of combinations. I love that expression.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

I believe in Russian you say истина в последней инстанции, right?

grumbleradded a comment 7 years ago

Да говорим. Похоже, почти то же самое, но опять же, слишком 'сильно' для данного контеста.
